June sucked.
The back story-
Jon started off the first week of the month at home from work on the couch complaining of stomach pain. Following doctor's orders he was not seeing any improvement and went in for a CT scan on 6th. He was immediately admitted into the hospital that night and had surgery Sunday morning (the 8th) removing all of the infected part of his lower intestine.
The good news-
Jon was not diagnosed with a chronic disease like we first feared. Now, (given this is already the end of June) he only has two short months left before full recovery and during that time he is free to return to work.
The gratitude-
Overwhelming, generous support of friends, family, and places of employment. Thank you.
The smile that lights up across Joe's face. The only thing to get me through sometimes.
The sense of humor my husband has through this whole ordeal. Keep up the high spirits sweetie, it's not too much longer.
The future-
Here's to a much brighter outlook for July.
The meantime-
Could somebody help Joseph find his golf clubs?
Last week I discovered that the thing I have been dreaming about for years has finally happened: Sonic has come to Minnesota.
I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since Jen Paddock took me to one in Denver several years ago (thanks girl - BFFs 4 EVAH!) and I experienced my very first Cherry Limeade with the #1 Sonic Burger Combo. Ever since that day I’ve been a Cherry Limeade junky, just twitching for a fix yet having to wait for my annual trip to Colorado.
That day came today, when Erica and I decided to brave the long lines during the lunch hour and order our first Minnesotan combo meals with Cherry Limeades. Our first step was to figure out how to get there. We had the address but after plugging it into Joan, my Garmin, we discovered that there must be some sort of cloaking devise hovering over the new Sonic because Joan couldn’t find it. We couldn’t even get directions through Mapquest and Yahoo Maps, so I decided to just head for I-94 while Erica messed around with my phone to see if she could somehow find a separate search engine to show us the way.
Once we managed to find it we discovered we would first need to go to the “Holding Area”, which was a block down the street from Sonic. It was here that we spoke with a Sonic attendant, verified that we were there to “drive up” rather than “drive through”, watched as the attendant placed a Sonic placard on my windshield, and then drove to the area of the parking lot designated for drive up customers.
We were even handed menus so we wouldn’t have to waste time figuring out what to order when we pulled up to the restaurant.
After only 10 minutes (I heard on the news that the lunch wait could last up to 40 minutes) we were given the signal from another Sonic attendant that there was a drive-in space available, so I pulled out of the holding area and swung into the Sonic parking area. I had to spend a few minutes chatting with the girl on the other end of the intercom because she seemed to have a tough time entering our order into the computer (I chose the same combo meal I ordered the very first time – the #1 Sonic Combo with Cherry Limeade and tots) but she seemed to get it in the end and all that was left for us was to wait for the attendant to bring our food and take our money.
And finally, that long awaited Cherry Limeade was mine. Pure heaven.
In hindsight, I don’t really recommend eating in the car (especially Erica – why did you wear white pants?) but I will savor that first taste of delicious cherry/lime goodness for a long time. Well, at least until I go back for another this weekend.
dew points in the 60s are not conducive to pleasant running.
i pretty much thought i was going to die after my 6-miler this weekend.
since it's doubtful that the humidity is going to go down during the course of the summer (this is why we all love MN, right?), i've decided i'll just do my long runs in the middle of the night.
seriously.
i'll wake up at 3am or so, go for my run, shower, and go back to bed.
at least until the dew points start dropping (maybe in september?).
in case you haven't been made aware of it already, i'm training for the twin cities marathon.
i've decided i'm going to try to track my progress on here.
cuz, you know, i'm sure it'll be super-stimulating for you non-runners...
in any case, i officially started training this week.
today is day 4.
i'm following hal higdon's novice marathon training program.
week one consists of 3 mile runs tuesday, wednesday, and thursday and a long run of 6 miles on saturday.
prior to this, i'd been doing 3 mile runs on tuesdays and thursdays and longish runs on saturdays (5-6 miles).
you'd think adding just one more 3-miler wouldn't be that big of a deal.
well, it has been.
yesterday i was hobbling around with seriously stiff legs and sore knees.
to be fair, though, i feel there are a few factors contributing to my discomfort:
a) i desperately need new running shoes. i haven't been able to afford them yet. i'm hoping i'll have a couple new pairs by mid-june.
b) for the week+ i was in alaska, i barely ate. and i only ran once. so not only did my training get off track, my energy stores got pretty depleted.
since i've been back in MN, i've been trying my hardest to consume as many high-quality carbohydrates as possible. it's not fun (i'm not a big carb fan), but i know it's a necessary component of my training.
blech.
c) my body is used to getting a recovery day between runs. yeah, 3 miles isn't much to "recover" from, but it makes a difference. a couple of weeks from now i'm sure i'll be accustomed to it. for now, though, owch.
overall, i'm really excited to embark on what will undoubtedly be quite a journey.
i need to prove to myself that i can committ to something.
hopefully you'll be willing to stick with me through the blisters and the lost toenails and occasionally give me some words of encouragement...
...and a massage. a massage would be great.
yes, the rumors are true. i'm back in MN.
no, robin and i aren't quarreling.
yes, i'm happy to be here.
no, i don't really feel like talking about why i'm back.
that is all. :)
...my new theme song.
who can turn the world on with her smile?
who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
well it's you girl, and you should know it.
with each glance and every little movement you show it.
love is all around, no need to waste it.
you can have a town, why don't you take it?
you're gonna make it after all.
you're gonna make it after all.
how will you make it on your own?
this world is awfully big, girl, this time you're all alone.
but it's time you started living.
it's time you let someone else do some giving.
love is all around, no need to waste it.
you can have a town, why don't you take it?
you're gonna make it after all.
you're gonna make it after all.
